Earlier this week I asked a panel of experts a simple question: “What advice would you give someone who is trying to stay sober throughout the holidays?” These individuals were themselves in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, and part of a Holiday Relapse Prevention program that I help teach each year.

When we make big changes in our lives–or try to make big changes–they can be like this sunset I saw last week, as I was walking to my car at the end of the workday. The Texas sky looked like it was on fire. I couldn’t decide if it was beautiful or eerie, alluring or scary, an exciting omen or the dusk of doom.

Food is a big part of what makes the holidays special. It’s what brings us together with family and friends. Good food–like the dish on the right–nourishes us with vitamins and nutrients, energy and resilience, and health and happiness.

Holidays can be difficult, especially for those who struggle with depression and addiction. Do you know the song, “Have Yourself A Merry, Little Christmas”? It was recorded by Judy Garland, in 1944, for the movie, “Meet Me in St. Louis.” It’s not a typical holiday song. It’s not cheery or saccharin or superficial.
